My first official :iconpokemon-league: battle!

:iconjak010891: Alealia VS Csilla :iconemmygir:
Shinka (Eevee) VS Ichabod (Paras)

-----------------------------------------------------------------------------

The story goes that both of our Pokemon aren't fully trained for battle; Shinka has been trained for Pokemon Contests but Alealia decided to bring her to the IPL to get some battle experience to train her up and for the purpose of Pokemon Contest Battles! Whilst Csilla, unbeknownst to Ichabod, has only included him in her team to evolve him!

They both see each other training in the Crimson Arena and decide that both of their Pokemon would gain experience faster if their Pokemon battled each other instead of training alone.

And that's how we got here! Shinka charged into battle with a Quick Attack of break-neck pace, at the same time letting loose a flurry of Swift stars. Ichabod is taken off-guard and braces for a hit! Swift hits the poor Paras from every direction before Shinka collides with him sending him flying back to Csilla's feet. Whilst Ichabod stands once more, determined to battle and make up for his short stature in his beloved trainer's team, Shinka springs into the air and with a graceful back-flip lands daintily before Alealia alert for her trainer's next command!

Nice. When I saw you start this the other day I didn't know how you would go with it, but I'm glad to see the direction you went with it.

The lighting is good, especially on the eevee with the highlights adding nice depth. In contrast the shadowing on the paras(?? not sure if I named this pokemon correctly) is good because it not only gives more depth to the pic but also highlights the attack taking place. The poses of both pokemon are also good, the eevee being a standout cause I do get the feeling it is jumping in the air to launch its attack. I can see why you're happy with the poses <img src="e.deviantart.net/emoticons/s/s…" width="15" height="15" alt=":)" title=":) (Smile)"/>

Saying that, I do have some criticism I want to point out. I feel the eevee has too much contrast between the shadow and highlight. I think adding a better midtone transition would help that out. Also I think the addition of text was a misstep. The 'Quick Attack' in the background had me confused for a second as to what it was, and then I asked why it was there if I could barely read it. I can see why you wanted to add it in as it shows the progression of the battle, but I think the execution is a bit off.

And then the 'Swift' text in amongst the attack. This is the part of the piece I hate the most. I know that's harsh to say but I really think your doing the overall piece a disservice by having it there. I knew straight away what the attack was and I think everyone who views this will too because of the unique animation for the attack from the games. To me the text breaks up the impact of the attack, and the choice of font is wrong for the kind of impact I feel you were going for.

Lastly, the background. I think you went too far with this. Considering the colour use in the pokemon and attack the background really detracts from the impact you could have got. I think it's just that there is so much blurring that I can't tell where the ground is or even where they are. Even the colour of the blurring pulls away impact from the attack because it just looks so brown.

Overall I like the piece and the stuff you've tried in making it. I can tell you're really progressing. I think you just need to be a little bit more brutal when it comes to deciding what stays and goes so that you can get the most impact out of your art.
